When Is Bunion and Hammertoe Surgery Recommended?
Bunions are misaligned big toe joints that can become swollen and tender, causing the joint of the big toe to slant outward, and the second joint to angle toward the other toes. Hammertoes are "bent" toes which usually begin as flexible deformities, becoming rigid over time. Bunions and hammertoes tend to be hereditary, but can be aggravated by shoes that are too narrow in the forefoot and toe. Pain often interferes with walking and exercise and often worsens over time. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy and/ or shoe gear modification. Surgery by a podiatric surgeon is frequently recommended to correct the problem.
