If you have ever twisted your ankle, you probably know how annoying and frustrating an ankle injury can be. However, when ankle pain ankle instability becomes chronic, it can greatly affect your quality of life and make walking or simply standing more difficult or impossible. Learn what causes ankle instability and how your podiatrist can help you get back on your feet with Dr. Barry Finkelstein, DPM, FACFAS at NYNJ Foot and Ankle Associates in Bronx, NY.

What causes ankle instability?
An ankle sprain can turn into chronic ankle instability. Chronic ankle instability occurs when the ankle is still weak and unstable six months after a sprain due to the ligaments or connective tissues healing incorrectly. Between 10% and 20% of people who sprain their ankle will develop ankle instability.

How do I know if I have ankle instability?
Symptoms of ankle instability vary from patient to patient. Most cases begin with a sprained ankle. If the sprain heals incorrectly and the ligaments are too loose, the ankle becomes chronically painful, meaning that it hurts for more than several weeks. You may also notice that your ankle gives out more often than normal, particularly during physical activities or exercise.

Treating Ankle Instability in Bronx, NY
Ankle instability treatments vary depending on the severity of the condition and the patient and their lifestyle. Treatment usually begins conservatively, with special physical therapy exercises to strengthen the joint and its connective tissues. A brace worn on the ankle to stabilize it may also help relieve and treat the symptoms of ankle instability. However, many cases of chronic ankle instability require surgery to correct the problem. The surgery usually shortens or tightens the loose ligaments or transfers a tendon from the leg to the ankle to replace the ligament. Your Bronx doctor can help you determine the best treatment for your condition.
